London Billboard Delights Chocoholics
In 2007, London shoppers got a chance to sample Thorntons chocolate, right off the billboard. An Easter marketing effort, it was made from bunnies, Easter eggs and panels, all pure chocolate. Delighted passersby were invited to snap off pieces of chocolate from directly from the billboard. And they did, with mouth watering energy and speed.
The finished chocolate billboard, the first of its kind, measured 14.5 feet wide and 9.5 feet high and weighed a
massive 860 lbs and was erected in London’s Covent Garden.
Happy Shoppers
Hungry shoppers invited to grab a bite took just three hours to finish it off. A variety of chocolate components made up the board, including plain chocolate, giant bunnies and hazelnut eggs.
Marketing executives pointed out it had taken three months to plan. Ten people worked over 300 hours to construct it. The designer said it required extensive work to transform the creative marketing idea into a workable, eatable reality.
The standard molds used for the eggs were too thin so new ones that were thicken and sturdier were created. During assembly, one of the panels accidentally smashed to the ground. Luckily, the crew had a spare so little time was lost.
Marketing Success
Months before, Thorntons had a disappointing Christmas selling period. The marketing department was determined to grab attention at the next big chocolate-selling holiday, which is Easter.
The billboard got worldwide attention. The BBC, major British papers like the Telegraph and popular viral websites like Popsugar carried the story.
Company executives reported that sales increased 2.5% after the billboard installation, which they considered a “well-worthwhile investment.”
