Ellijay, GA Facts

Ellijay, Georgia is the county seat of Gilmer County and has a population of just under 2,000 people.

Ellijay, Georgia is best known for its annual Apple Festival in October. Gilmer County is known as the “Apple Capital of Georgia.”

Ellijay, GA was a remote mountain community until the railroad came through in 1884. The area remained fairly isolated, but this did allow for a bit of a boom in the timber industry.

The completion of the Zell Miller Mountain Parkway in 1991 brought more traffic to the area, thus lessening the area’s isolation. The new road was named after Georgia Governor and U.S. Senator Zell Miller.
